Goldwork double helix

In a previous life I was a scientist. I did a PhD in Neuroscience and was particularly fascinated by SciArt. I love the images science can produce and the art that exists in nature and science.

When I had to design a piece for the goldwork module of my Royal school of needlework certificate I went back to my science for inspiration.

The DNA helix makes the building bricks of life and offered a great challenge to work in metal threads.

Goldwork uses padding to give the 3-D affect and here I used increasing thicknesses of metal threads to add depth to the spiral.
