Blackwork lion

I worked this piece of blackwork from a photo Duncan took whilst we were on honeymoon. The shot is one of a number he took of this particular lion.

The piece focuses in on the muscles clearly visible on the front leg of the lion. I chose to crop the design very tightly around the lion but the purposeful walk of the lion is still evident.

Blackwork uses geometric patterns which can be built up or broken down and worked in different thicknesses of thread to create the shading. I found the concept difficult to begin with having been used to using and blending colours, but I love the subtlety of the technique and I love the finished product.
