Exploring Sewing one stitch at a time

Beanbag for D's camera

My fiancee's really interested in photography and recently got a new lens for his camera. To save him from rolling up a jumper when he tries to take close ups of flowers, I made him this beanbag to keep the lens steady. I pretty much made it up as I went along, but here's a how-to:

Materials

Fold the first piece of material in half and sew down the sides (straight stitch and then zig-zag to strengthen). At this point I should have sewn half way across to make sewing it up a bit quicker and stronger.

Turn the bag inside out and then carefully pour in dried pulses/rice - I used a mixture - till firm, but still squishy. Then hand sew the top closed folding the seam in.

As this will be used outside on the grass I added a removable cover that can be washed. I pinned the material into a pillow case shape (check that it will lay right when turned inside out). Hem the loose edges, then sew and strengthen the sides with zig-zag stitch.

Voila - a camera lens bean bag! Though I'm not sure how it will fair in the rain with rice in there!
